Magic in a bottle?
I dare say YES!
I had heard the praises of ORB (oil rubbed bronze) from oodles of bloggers and I had to put it to the test.
So I scoured my home in search of spray paintable items.
The searching certainly didn’t take long.
My home has many dated items that were screaming for a little ORB lovin’!
Now take this guilded guy below, he’s ok, but …….
….add a little ORB and voila! Hello 2010!
You can see the metallic sparkle the paint has in the detail below.
Then I decided to tackle our powder room’s hardware.
Boring builder grade reigns supreme here.
Even this very old trash can received a facelift.
I swear it looks like the real thing! Whoda thunk it?!
Then I sprayed the ceramic toilet paper holder and even the bright gold door stop!
It’s all in the details people!
Those bright gold door hinges and door knob are bugging me too, but that’s for another day.
I even sprayed a scratched up black frame with a gorgeous pic in it.

Rust-oleum also makes brushed nickel paint!

I too am a lover of ORB, although I have never heard it called that! One of these days I will post about the many, many items in our home that have been allowed to stay because of ORB 🙂

I’m a friend and follower of Beth’s blog and came over to visit. : ) ORB has been the darling of the blogging world {I’ve done several projects with it myself}, but I sense a new love will be coming along. It, as well as my black and heirloom white, will always be favorites though, because they work in my house. Off to read some of your other posts!

I’m quite impressed with the transforming powers of that ORB metallic spray but, but just one question… It appears to me that that is not the same mirror – they are different sizes and have different frames. What’s up with that?
Thank you. Yes, you noticed correctly. I had 2 very similar, ornate gold mirrors, and had forgotten to take a picture before it was painted. So the gold frame is for reference.
Thanks for this post, I have some things in my basement that I love and don’t want to part with but the finishes just don’t work any longer, until now!!!
Did you use any kind of primer for these projects, or did you just start painting??
The Rustoleum Universal is primer and paint in one so no priming was necessary (which I love!!!).
Wow, this all looks great! Did you ever try to do any door knobs, hinges, etc and does it flake off?
I am LOVING everything that you have done. I am very interested in the towel bar and the toilet paper holder. I have the same builder grade ones in my house and do not want to spend money to replace them. I want to hit them with a can of the brush nickel from Rust-oleum. How are your items in the bathroom holding up??? I love your blog by the way!
Hi Nicole, Thanks so much! Everything is holding up really well except for the toilet paper holder. Because that receives the most abuse. I think for that particular item, I really would recommend using a primer first and then painting it. I’ve used the brushed nickel on several door knobs in the house and it’s help up no problem, but for some reason that toilet paper holder hasn’t. Hope that helps! 🙂

I wanted to share that my husband and I also went nuts with oil rubbed bronze paint a couple of years ago and changed all of the door hardware in our house from the builder grade gold…what a difference! It has held up well so far.

Hello! I just found your blog from a picture of your coastal christmas tree on Pinterest. I have been reading your posts all night and am definitely going to subscribe. There is another Rustoleum color that I just love, it’s called Rustic Mist. I find it has a little more depth than the ORB but both are lovely!

Love how your mirror turned out with the ORB! I have a similar one that I am going to try this on. Did you tape and cover the mirror part before spraying? Or how did you get such nice clean edges on it? Thanks!

Yes, I covered the mirror with a plastic trash bag and taped it down along the edges with blue painter’s tape, sprayed, allowed it to dry then peeled off the tape and bag. 😉 Super simple.
My ceramic towel racks are embedded deep in the sheet rock. And I have wallpaper around them. Did you just tape trashbags around them and spray paint in the bathroom?

No, I removed mine from the wall. Most towel racks rest on metal brackets that are bolted into the wall. Some can be removed by loosening the very tiny screw on the underside or if yours are like mine, then all that needs to be done is to (gently) knock the ceramic upward, from underneath and it should shimmy off.

I am a huge fan or ORB! I painted the plastic window boxes, large tub style plastic planters, an outdoor plastic screen to hide the air conditioner, a small wooden trellis, and various outdoor ornaments. I also rescued two chairs with discolored plastic strapping and painted the entire chair. The patio looks so coordinated and the color is a beautiful backdrop for the many colors of flowers and vines planted in the boxes and planters. After three years of full time exposure to all the seasons of Michigan, I bought another can and did a quick touch-up and it all looks new again. It is a bargain in a can!
Oh wow! You painted a lot! And yes, my outdoor pots that I painted years ago still look great too! Love that paint!

We are Working on our bathrooms and have the old ceramic towel and toilet paper holders. How did you spray paint it? Did you sand it first and how did you so it without getting paint all over your walls? Any advice would help! Thanks

Hi Katie,
My ceramic hardware was removable. And no, I didn’t sand it. The paint has a primer in it. If yours are cemented into the wall then that will make things much more difficult. My 1st choice would not be to spray paint inside the house but it can be done. You would need to cover and tape off everything (and I mean everything). Best of luck! 😉

Love the transformation!!!! Would this work on a stand up shower frame, faucets, etc?? Do you have to score it first with steel wool or something like that?
