Hi friends! I’ve been MIA for over a week now. It’s been a rough one for sure. I procrastinated and didn’t finish taxes until Monday. Having a home business makes tax time more complicated and stressful. Then my daughter came down with a horrible case of stomach flu. Then to top it off, we spent a day at the hospital with my husband who had extensive sinus surgery. So I’ve been on supermom/wife duty this week and feel totally exhausted! Thankfully the sun has been shining which helps my mood and I had a moment to take a few quick pics of some new blue and white living room updates which I’m excited to share with you!

The two big changes were adding additional seating and a new rug. We have a very large sectional but with a family of 6, additional seating is always needed, especially with when my teens bring home all their friends. Always know that I never buy anything at full price. I picked up these navy linen chairs for $100 off each from Pier 1! The fabric color looks very similar to dark denim. The cushion is impressively thick and nicely firm and comfortable. The wood trim has a white wax finish which settles into the grain. It’s gorgeous! The chairs come in a flax and navy with your choice of dark or light wood. I loved how the wood trim matches our weathered oak floors and DIY wood beam mantel.
The chair is a nice size. It’s not to big or too small. I’m 5’4″ and it fits me well. My husband is 6’2″ and actually gave his “comfort approval” (which is rare).
The next big blue and white living room update was a new rug! I absolutely adore this Muted Flourish Rug! (Click that blue link if you’re interested in purchasing or finding out more). You probably recognize this rug, because many home bloggers own it. I had been eyeing it for a very long time and finally took the plunge when it was on a deep sale. The rug has a nice pile to it and is very soft and comes in 10 sizes. It does not shed and cleans up rather nicely. How do I know it cleans up well? Let’s just say that my husband christened the rug in a post surgery nauseous episode. Ahhhh… fun times…. (sigh). He was so apologetic and sweet. Poor guy.
Below is a better full view of the beautiful rug. I love the washed out, distressed design.
Here is a closeup of the pattern. The white areas are not pure white. They are a mottled mix of Sea Salt blue and white. The camera does not pick up the Sea Salt color very well, but I was so happy to discover that it matched my Sea Salt by SW wall color perfectly!
Here’s a view from the other side of the room where our TV is located. Maybe one day I’ll show that wall. The TV is sitting on an ugly old desk until I find a stand I really love.
So what do you think of the changes? I personally love them and was ready for more color in our lives. Blue and white is so classic and I think it will work nicely with our coastal inspired home decor.

Beautiful room and style! Is the paint color Topsail? Love it!

You’re killing me here, so wish my living room looked that pretty. It’s nice and all but your room is very differently laid out and we have no fire place. And do I ever adore your rug, your whole room with blues/whites really speaks to me.
My choices are limited on what I can do, Mr.Furry is not into redoing rooms just cause it’s what I want, or we can afford. We live on our SS, not an easy job where we live.
Your coffee table is incredible also, all the lovely texture in your room is so comfortable looking.
Those chairs are wonderful, you are talented decorator and lady.
Where did this week go? Hope daughter and husband are doing much better and you can get some rest.
Happy weekend

Hi Jane Ellen – I am also on SS and let me tell you how I decorate for cheap! Get a Facebook account and join the different marketplace pages in your area. Where I live the pages have names such as “Thousand Oaks & Moorpark Buy, Trade and sell”, “Thousand Oaks Online Garage Sale”, etc… I have gotten beautiful furnishings for my home this way! You should try it.
PS Kim – your house looks so pretty!

Great advice Laura! Thanks so much!
Debbie says
Love everything in your room. So sorry about your family’s illness and surgery but hopefully everyone is much better now. Love the chairs in the blue which Pier 1 no longer offers. They do have the cream. The coffee table is fantastic and with storage makes it double perfect. I’ve always loved anything made with abaca. The sea salt color is lovely. Did you have the paint store adjust it at all or use it exactly as is, please?
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Hi Debbie! I’ve had Sea Salt in our home for several years, in a few rooms (nothing adjusted). Just know that the color is quite interesting because it is known to look extremely different depending upon the lighting situation. In bright sunlight it looks more blue and in shade or a northern exposure it looks more blue-green-gray Also, anything on the computer looks different than in real life. It’s a great color to try though too! SW has a 40% off sale nationwide through the April 23rd on all their paints. Their sample pots are only $4.99 if you want to try it out. Hope that helps! 😉

That room is gorgeous. I absolutely love it. Growing up with Grandma we had everything blue, purple, and green. I was so tired of those colors I wouldn’t even consider blue or purple and its been 40 years! Even now I can’t handle purple but I am Loving the blue!
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Ha! I don’t remember the purple and green but I do remember the blue… and clowns… (scary). Thanks so much though! Glad you like this blue theme!

Stunning!! Where do I begin the chairs, the rug, your coffee table oh my. I want that mirror to. My taste all of it. Can I ask you where you purchased your sofa, it’s all perfection.

I’m drooling over the chairs! My couch is white with navy blue starfish, and those chairs would match perfectly. Really loving the direction you’ve taken in your living room. Hope everyone is feeling better, and that you get some well deserved rest.

Glenna says
I love this room and may copy many aspects for a reno project we’re doing at the beach. I clicked link for the chairs but was disappointed to see the huge price difference from what you paid ($449 vs $100). How were you able to get them so discounted?
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Hi Glenna! I’m so sorry, I think you misread the post… I purchased the chairs at a $100 off sale. They were not $100. I bought both chairs for under $500. I only buy during big holiday sales and make sure that I’m subscribed to their newsletters to get the insight to their best deals.
Lisa says
Your Sea Salt walls look so neutral – mine look like I’m underwater at Pensacola Beach!
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Hi Lisa! I understand what you are saying. It is the number one complaint of the color. People love it but you need to consider lighting when using it. I have sea salt in the front room & foyer of my house and the color looks WAY more blue. It has the sunny southern exposure though which brings out the blue-green hues. My family room is on the north side of my home and is really quite shady. The color on the northside is much more blue-gray. Also, the sheen of the paint will effect how the paint reflects light. I use eggshell 90% of the time for walls. Flat will look darker/more saturated, whereas higher sheens will look lighter. You could always ask SW to mix it up 1/2 the color. Hope that helps some! ~KIM

Lovely home both lighter blue and deeper shade.
Stephanie says
Hi! I like how you updated the coffee table to have a more coastal vibe by painting it white. What kind of pint did you use and how exactly did you do it? Ie Did you need to sand the wood down or prime it?
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Hi Stephanie!
I used regular craft paint and I’m regretting that decision. I have repainted it since using Fusion Mineral paint. I recommend either priming it first and then using craft paint or using mineral paint or chalk paint. Both mineral and chalk do not require priming beforehand. Hope that helps! ~ KIM
Beverly Mezzatesta says
can you tell me about the book shelves, I love them and t he storage cabinets. Thank you
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Thank you Beverly! We had a local custom cabinet maker build them for us. Having all the storage underneath is such a blessing!
Elaine says
I love the Devon chairs. I clicked the link for the pretty navy chairs and it does not show the information. Can you please tell me where to find them? Thank you very much for sharing all of your amazing ideas!
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Hi Elaine!
Thank you so much! Those chairs called “Devon chairs” were from Pier 1 but unfortunately they went bankrupt and are closing all their stores nationwide. It’s such a sad thing. I have been looking for something similar to link but haven’t found anything yet. I’ll update the link once I find a good substitute. ~ KIM

Love this blue & white room. Can you tell me what color fabric is on the sectional?
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Thank you Meghan! The sectional fabric is Pottery Barn’s “Performance Everydaysuede” in Oat. It washes up great and doesn’t stain at all. We’ve had the sectional for a decade now. They are all on sale currently too. Hope that helps! Have a great day~ KIM
Shannon Smith says
Hi Kim,
I have a very similar living room set up as you and I’m curious about your fireplace. Do you know the name or make of it? Is it gas, propane or electric? We are in the process of building and I am looking for a shallow depth propane fireplace. Thanks for any help you can give me! Your living room is gorgeous! -Shannon
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
Hi Shannon! I actually don’t know much about the actual fireplace. It is gas and was installed before we moved to this house. When our house flooded 4 years ago we removed all the brick, lowered it to floor level, added a tile hearth and surround and built the wood beam mantel and trim around it. Here is the process of what we did: https://www.sandandsisal.com/2016/08/coastal-familyroom-and-fireplace-makeover.html Hope that helps some! Have a great week~ KIM
